In a historic move for sea angling in Britain, a catch-and-release bluefin tuna fishery is set to open in UK waters later this summer. The landmark development gives all anglers the chance to target these thrilling creatures, which grow to well over 500lb and are now once again present in good numbers off our coastline during the summer and autumn months.
The new fishery will open on August 2 and will be strictly for recreational purposes, adhering to a rod and line, catch-and-release approach, with no boarding of fish in order to protect the welfare of the tuna.
The government is issuing up to 100 permits across the private and charter boat sectors. Applications for these close on June 30.
“This news is the culmination of many years’ work by a number of people,” said Steve Murphy, CEO of the UK Bluefin Tuna Association.
“It would not have been possible without the commitment, professionalism and patience of the charter skippers, their crews and the paying customers who helped to build the foundations for this fishery.
“We are optimistic that it can evolve over the coming years and establish itself as a true Mecca for the catch and release of Atlantic bluefin tuna.”
Jamie Cook, CEO of the Angling Trust, added: “This recreational fishery benefits both the environment and the coastal economies, and we are delighted that the future of the fishery and of these wonderful fish has finally been secured.”
