Traditionally, baits like worms and casters were essentials for bream, but these days the species has developed a taste for modern offerings, as proven by this giant 18lb 2oz slab that took a 12mm pop-up presented on a carp angler's Ronnie Rig.
It was caught by Frankie Fairbrother, from a 30-acre lake in Newark, where he targeted a spot on a gravel bar 68 yards out that he'd baited with corn.

"I know a lot of carp anglers don't like bream, but the lake I was on is the only one where I target both species," he told us.
"I'm therefore very happy with this fish. On the take I immediately knew it was a bream, but not how big it was until I saw it rod length out.
"I realised then that it was a special fish, and it turned out to be the biggest-ever bream caught from the complex."
