Royalty Fishery produces another massive chub

The Royalty Fishery on the Hampshire Avon is most well known for its barbel fishing, being one of the most prolific fisheries in the country in its heyday. Alongside the barbel and huge pike it is famous for, the river is now starting to produce some huge chub, as Ivor Godley can testify to with his recent capture of a 7lb 14oz beast.

“The river was running high, and flowing fairly fast after recent rain, which normally coincides with good barbel fishing but slower sport where the chub are concerned," Ivor said.

"After finding a deep eddy off a bend, I dropped a lump of cheesepaste out alongside a few matching freebies, hoping the scent would draw any fish up in the coloured water."

“After about 30 minutes I received a gentle bite, struck, and the fish pulled hard, trying to get into the main flow."

“I caught a glimpse of it, but couldn’t tell what it was – I certainly didn’t think it was a chub. When it reached the net, I was absolutely gobsmacked," he recalled.
