Savage battle leads to superb chub capture

The Great Ouse is a river that has started to find form recently, producing a few big fish captures. Whilst it isn't always the easiest river, there are some real specimen fish to target, as angler Mark Austin proved when he landed this magnificent 7lb 3oz chub.

After some recent rainfall had led to unfavourable conditions, Mark had been monitoring the river levels, waiting for the river to become more suitable to get a bite.

“Conditions looked fantastic on the Great Ouse, which was on its way back down after rain," Mark said.

"With some colour in the water, I opted to fish a big lump of paste wrapped around a dumbell boilie, with a 1.5oz lead."

"I cast under a slack area directly below an overhanging tree that looked perfect to hold some chub."

“Within 10 minutes of casting, the quivertip hooped over, and the fish darted off at a rate of knots, pulling all the classic chub tricks to try and dump my hook in a snag."

"In fact, it gave the most powerful fight I’ve had from the species, and I thought it might have been a barbel to begin with!"

"Despite its attempts, I managed to safely net the fish, which turned out to be this chub of 7lb 3oz,” he said.
