A 2lb roach is a benchmark specimen for many anglers due to its rarity, especially in rivers, making it a goal of many to land one. It goes without saying that they are not the easiest fish to catch, often navigating not only anglers but also floods, predators, and pollution incidents before surpassing the 2lb barrier, making them incredibly wary and notoriously difficult to tempt at times.
However, 10-year-old Leo Maidment recently found some roach in a feeding mood, leading to a remarkable session with his stepdad, Matthew Purves. Together, they landed several roach over 2lb— making for a session to remember and an achievement many anglers can only dream of so early in his angling journey!
“I went with my 10-year-old stepson, Leo, on a trip to the River Frome at the weekend. He spotted a lovely bend with a steady flow and decided to fish on the crease with a large maggot feeder," Matthew told us.
“He decided on a five-maggot hookbait and after casting out, he had to act quickly, as we each reeled in a big roach. We couldn’t believe our eyes, because the fish weighed 2lb 10oz and 2lb 5oz!"
“Leo pointed out that the roach would probably be shoaled up, which spurred us on to fish more. We went on to land six good roach in total, with the other four fish all around the 2lb mark.”
