Sam Smith kicked off his new river campaign in fine style by landing rudd of 3lb 3oz, 2lb 14oz, 2lb 9oz and 2lb exactly.
The Norfolk-based painter had the trio of ‘twos’ in the morning, before sport then died. He persevered and, just as the light was fading at 10pm, saw a few good fish roll.
Knowing another bite may be on the cards, Sam switched to a larger, 8g float pattern, and cast his bread hookbait right at the showing fish.
A minute passed before the surface erupted and his float vanished. On the strike, Sam connected with a solid resistance, as the fish held deep, and a few nervous moments followed when the fish locked him up in weed briefly before he was able to steer it into the waiting net.
