Every angler has hooked a surprise or two during while fishing and John Cady got what was probably the biggest shock of his career during a recent session on a southern river.

Fishing The Royalty Fishery stretch of the Hampshire Avon, he legered a deadbait in search of the resident pike.

The offering was eventually snaffled up and once it came close to the net, John realised that it wasn’t his intended quarry that was attached to the other end.

He eventually won the battle, with a 10lb 4oz bass his reward! It isn’t the first time that bass have been caught from the area though, with the venue only a few miles away from the south coast and Christchurch Harbour.
