Fishing often throws up a surprise or two, even when anglers target modern, highly stocked, commercial venues.

That was certainly the case for Jan Koltan on a recent trip to Longbridge Lake, where during a morning session with a friend, he hooked something substantially different to the carp he was after.

Fishing a Method feeder with a 10mm wafter hookbait, he waited a while for a bite, but eventually he had an indication a fish was on the hook.

"My quivertip bent round, and I hooked what I at first thought was a bream," he told us.

"It felt unusual, so I pulled to get the fish off bottom... only to find I’d hooked a massive pike!

"I played it carefully, so not to be cut off, and soon had this huge fish in the net.

"It weighed 25lb on the scales and measured 108cm.”
