Shock sturgeon caught from the Trent

Of all the species you expect to catch when fishing on the River Trent, a sturgeon is probably very low on that list, but that is exactly what happened to Dave Howarth when he caught this 48lb fish.

Fishing the middle reaches of the river, Dave was targeting the prolific stocks of large barbel as he normally does, but his next bite was something he will never forget.

"While out fishing on the River Trent targeting barbeI with my usual RG Baits Crab boilies on a size 5 fox curve shank hook," Dave told us.

"After a fairly slow start, I got a run at 11pm which just felt different compared to other bites, it was savage."

"The first initial run took 80 yards of line down river, after a 30-minute battle and some scary moments, I managed to see and eventually struggle to fit all 48lb of hard-fighting sturgeon in my net."

"Definitely a fish to remember, and what made it even more memorable was the tackle I used which consisted of my Daiwa sensor 2 1/4 lb tc carp rod I saved and bought with my birthday money in 1996 when I was 15 years old."

"The reel I used was handed down to me when my dad passed away, making the whole experience one I'll never forget," Dave concluded.
