Shock Trent salmon banked on the feeder

When Marc Wilson lifted into a bite while fishing a maggot feeder on the River Trent at Newark, the last thing he expected to be on the other end was this long and lean 6lb 8oz salmon!

Around a dozen times each year he drives from his home in Chesterfield to enjoy a weekend on the popular waterway, where he mainly targets barbel.

While doing so on his latest visit, he decided to give the swim a rest and have a go on the feeder, hoping a good roach or two might make an appearance.

“I was using a 9ft feeder rod, size 16 hook and a 4lb hooklink when I had a really slow bite and lifted into a fish,” he told us.

“Initially, I thought a pike had done me, but the fish proceeded to go up and down the river before jumping 3ft clear of the water!”

Taking his time due to the light set-up, Marc’s patience was eventually rewarded when he slipped the netunder the rare game fish.

“I couldn’t believe I had caught it, to be honest,” he added.

“But it shows that the river must be cleaner than I thought it was!”
