How often do the sessions that have very little planning end up being the ones where we catch fish we could have only dreamed of? Well, this exact session greeted Stephen Gibbons earlier this month, when a break in the weather saw him land a massive 7lb 9oz chub from the Dorset Stour, which also smashed his PB.
“On a three-night break to Dorset with my girlfriend, she said I could have a day’s fishing if I wanted to," Stephen told us.
“I kept an eye on the forecast and decided to fish the Stour on the second day, just before heavy rain was forecast."
“The water temperature was up a few degrees and the river was racing through, so I went with a boilie approach, fished below a 4oz inline lead."
“I soon landed a chub of around 5lb 8oz and then lost what I reckoned was a barbel."
“Then, at midday, I had another take and hooked what I could feel was a very good fish."
“After a few final runs close-in, where it tried to get into a snag, I netted a large chub. I couldn’t believe the belly on it," Stephen recalled.
“At 7lb 9oz, it’s a new personal best,” he said.
