The biggest fish on Cambridgeshire's renowned St Ives complex has hit the bank, in the shape of the impressive 'Laneys' at a best-ever weight of 56lb 4oz.

'Laneys' from St Ives Shallow Pit.

Fishery manager Gordy Howes was the lucky captor of the highly prized fish, which is named after legendary big carper Dave Lane and believed to be over 40 years old.

"I did not expect this one after the season I've been having," Gordy told us.

"After and awful spring and tricky early summer, I decided to get back on the Shallow Pit, as my target from the Lagoon had been out twice."

After a difficult first week of fishing, Gordy got back amongst the fish with a 20lb-plus mirror, before wind and algae began to cause serious problems for his presentation.

"When the wind changed I was able to fish effectively and the first bite was 'Laneys', the first time the fish has been caught this year," he told us.

"It was unbelievable, buzzing is not the word.

"Big thanks Arkwell Foelley and Mainline for the ongoing support of both myself and the fishery!"

Despite clearly liking its food, the mega carp fell to a single Mainline Cell corkball pop-up fished entirely on its own, a tactic more commonly used in the colder months - fantastic angling!
