Some of our angling targets are broken the very next session after setting them, while some are never broken. Chris Smith, was one such angler who thought he would never catch his target fish of a 2lb roach from a Lincolnshire river after trying to bank one for over 20 years.

Thankfully, his effort and persistence was finally rewarded on his latest session, when he landed this superb roach that almost breached the 3lb barrier, when it tipped the scales to 2lb 14oz.

A real old warrior of a roach

"I’ve been chasing giant roach on this river for the past 20 years, but my efforts have always been thwarted by chub. I’ve previously caught roach up to 1lb 10oz from this venue," Chris explained.

"However, I had given the river a rest for the last two years to focus on other waters. Just before the New Year, I decided to return, mainly to show my son how to trot a stick float with a centrepin before he headed back to school," he added.

"Using a Drennan 6x No. 4 stick float and 4lb line straight through—mainly to handle the chub—I tied on a size 16 Guru match hook."

"The fish took the bait only a couple of rod lengths downstream near some reeds. It put up a strong fight, and I assumed it was a chub until it rolled into the net."

"This fish had an impressive frame and could easily top 3lb in peak condition, though it looked like an old warrior past its prime."
