Canals in the UK aren’t typically synonymous with big carp, with anglers often assuming they contain mostly small fish. However, if you know where to look, they can hold some real treasures, as Ash Burton discovered when he landed this superb 21lb 14oz common carp while fishing with his dad, Taylor.

What made the capture even more impressive was the style of angling they used, with the pair opting for traditional float tactics fished from a centrepin reel.

“My son, Ash, caught this 21lb 14oz carp from our local Ashby Canal on a short afternoon session," dad, Taylor told us.

“His winning tactic was fishing a cube of hair-rigged luncheon meat beneath a small float, which he presented ‘lift style’.

“This was fished over a bed of finely chopped meat using a 2lb test curve barbel rod and a 40-year-old centrepin reel. The fish was the result of one of only two bites we had that session.”
