Superb perch welcomes angler back after life-saving surgery

As anglers, we are well aware of the benefits fishing provides for both our mental and physical health. Being outside, just angler against fish, surrounded by nature, is truly unbeatable. As Chris Lowe put it, 'It truly is the best medicine,' after landing a superb 4lb 10oz perch from a local river.

Chris had life-saving surgery only eight weeks ago, yet was still eager to begin his autumn campaign and his first lure fishing session back on the bank kicked off in fine style when he landed the impressive perch.

"After feeling well enough to get back on the bank, I decided to take the lure rod out to a spot I know holds some perch," Chris told us.

"It was probably a bit early—both for my recovery and for the really big perch—but I just had to get out on the bank."

The area Chris was fishing is notoriously snaggy, which is probably why it’s such a great place to catch perch. Undeterred, he kept casting and losing lures, simply enjoying his time by the water. However, his patience and enthusiasm eventually paid off.

"I decided to change tactics after losing a few of my lures. I switched to a Jika setup with a weedless lure, allowing me to keep the lure in the cover without snagging as easily," he explained.

"Not long after the change, I had a hard hit on my Geecrack Bellows Claw lure, and I was into a good fish."

"Not wanting to lose it, I played the fish hard, and before long, I had a massive perch in my net. The beautiful fish weighed 4lb 10oz and measured an impressive 48cm."

'It was great to be out—fishing truly is the best medicine,' he said."
