Superb Severn grayling banked on a lure

It's been a great winter for grayling catches, with big fish being caught on all manner of baits, ranging from maggots to bread.

However, one of the more unusual captures emerged this week when Irek Zajaczkowski got in touch to tell us about this superb grayling which he caught using a micro jig from the upper River Severn. It measured 52cm long and was estimated to weigh over 3lb.

Although the use of artificial baits for grayling isn’t new –fly anglers catch them regularly – Irek’s approach is a little more unique.

“I fish for grayling lots in winter using micro jigs, which I tie myself,” he told us.

“They look like a nymph that fly anglers would use, but mine are a little bigger and can be fished on a light spinning rod.

“This fish gave a great fight on the delicate tackle!”
