It wasn't long ago that any catch reports of sturgeon sent shockwaves through the sport, but the prehistoric-looking species is becoming increasingly common in our stillwaters, and last week Alex Boag landed one of the biggest ever from a British lake weighing a mighty 127lb.

The 17-year-old was fishing at The New Celtic Lakes, in Wales, when he hooked the fish on a 16mm wafter fished over a bed of pellets.

“I received a slow bite and once I picked up the rod the fish charged off, going up and down the lake,” he said.

“The 30-minute fight was definitely the hardest battle of my life! Fishery owner Neil Bennet assisted with landing the fish and helped me hold it for photographs, before safely returning it.”
