The River Thames is a special river, with giants of all species seemingly lurking around the corner for those willing to put in the effort to catch them. Despite living almost three hours away from the Thames, Midlands angler Charlie Wright felt it offered him the best chance of landing a monster perch over 4lb—a fish he has dreamed of catching from flowing water since he first started fishing as a child.

"After searching the rivers far and wide for the last three years to no avail, I couldn’t believe my luck this winter after landing five huge perch in the last six weekends!" Charlie informed us.
"I braced these along with over twenty 3-pounders up to 3.14, plus a PB Zander of 10lb—all from the mighty River Thames," he added.
"My first one was 4lb 2oz, then the following weekend, I returned to the same spot and nicked another at 4lb 3oz. The weekend after that, I managed a 4lb 4oz, it was dream fishing."
"Pushing my luck, I just had to get back to the stretch again, and unbelievably, I landed a good perch at 4lb 2oz, before I managed to land a new PB of 4lb 5oz, a fish I have always wanted to catch!"

"They were all caught on livebait roach and gudgeon, fished paternoster style. The rig consisted of small 5g Zeppler floats with short 8lb Acolyte fluorocarbon hook links, coupled with size 6 wide-gape carp hooks," Charlie explained..
"Certainly some of the best perch fishing I’ve ever had—a winter I won’t be forgetting anytime soon. It’s safe to say it made all the 3:00 AM alarms worthwhile, along with the five-hour round trips."
