Fans of one of Britain’s most popular fish species are being invited to take part in the National Tench Championships this spring.

Run by the Tenchfishers group, the contest will be held over the weekend of May 16-18 at Oxfordshire’s Linear Fisheries, where participants can win a hefty £1,250 worth of prizes as well as enjoying some fantastic fishing.

“In last year’s event there were 28 tench to 9lb 12oz landed, with six anglers breaking their PBs,” Tenchfishers secretary Ben Kennedy said.

“The winner is whoever catches the most tench, and so even fish of a few ounces will count and are worth celebrating.”
