The plight of independent tackle shops

The recent closure of BobCo Tackle, a prominent independent tackle shop, has highlighted the challenges facing the UK's tackle retail sector. Despite a strong online presence and a diverse product range, BobCo's demise underscores the harsh realities of operating in a competitive market.

YOU CAN BUY THE BEST CARP FISHING BAITS FROM YOUR LOCAL RETAILER

This is a topic that is dearly close to my heart and as a retailer for over 20 years, I can tell you that the industry has lost it's soul. I would look forward to Friday afternoons and Saturday morning when the shop would be full of like minded people, picking up their bait, essential items of tackle, having a cup of tea, sharing tips and stories from the previous week and advising and sharing information for the upcoming sessions.

This has all but gone due to the rise in social media platforms removing the social aspect of the local tackle shop, as more and more people consume this information directly from the palm of their hand.

While large corporations like Angling Direct continue to expand, independent tackle shops struggle to survive. Many face rising costs, declining customer spending, and increasing competition from online retailers and counterfeit products.

Tom Humphreys, founder of The Tackleshop Project, emphasises the importance of supporting independent tackle shops. He highlights the unique character, local knowledge, and personalised service that these shops offer. However, he also acknowledges the financial challenges they face, often leading to sacrifices like forgoing wages.

Tom calls for a united effort from the angling community to save independent tackle shops. He encourages anglers to shop locally, support businesses that offer quality products and services, and be mindful of the impact of counterfeit goods.

Not all independents close down due to business problems, we are an aging industry in participation and retail, with many independents reaching retirement age, and unfortunately there is no hunger or incentive for future generations to take control and move these businesses forward.
