Fish don't have to be big to be spectacular, and this is certainly the case with the ruffe caught by lure angler David Hill. While participating in an organised lure event last weekend, he couldn’t believe his eyes when the fish surfaced. It was clearly an enormous specimen, appearing larger than the current UK record.
To put things into perspective, ruffe are typically quite small. The current British record is a mere 5oz 4drams, set way back in 1980, making it one of the longest-standing records. Over recent years, ruffe populations have declined in our waterways, which makes a catch of this magnitude even more impressive!
"I'm from Saddleworth and attended an FFS Lures "Fish In" event on the Coventry Canal, an event I had been looking forward to," David told us.
"I fished at Hawkesbury Junction on Saturday, where I caught a Zander and some small perch, which was great fun and kept me entertained throughout the day."

"On the Sunday, I fished at Nuneaton on the same canal, using BFS lure tactics, I caught a decent perch on my first cast, so things were looking hopeful for the session ahead."
"The fishing was steady until about 10:30, with plenty of smaller perch, all caught on FFS Lures 40mm Craw21 in Junebug colour and FFS Lures 50mm stick baits in various colours."

"At around 2pm, I had a hard take on the stick bait while fishing under a bridge."
"To my surprise it was a massive ruffe, certainly the biggest one I have ever seen in all my years of angling! I’m gutted I didn’t weigh it."
"I, along with others, now think it was a probable new British Record as it certainly looked and felt a lot bigger than 5oz! The Lure I caught it on was designed and handmade by Tom Moir at FFS Lures," David concluded.
