Fly fishing for carp was once regarded as a bit of a gimmick, but last week one angler proved its effectiveness as a big fish-catching approach after landing three thirty-pounders using the tactic.

Nigel Wood banked fish scaling 30lb 12oz and 30lb 4oz, plus a few upper ‘twenties’ in an afternoon session, before following that haul up a few days later with a 31lb 4oz fish.

Using a seven-weight rod, 15lb leader and a Pink McZigbug fly, Nigel cast at carp that he could see searching weedbeds for natural food.

“That first session was a day when everything fell into place – I doubt I’ll ever experience anything like it again in my lifetime,” he told us.

“Then, the 31lb fish that I caught a few days later put up an absolutely crazy battle!”
