Last season Grafham Water was in blistering big-perch form, and it hasn’t take long for its big predators to start showing again this time around, as Alex Mason found when he landed this 4lb 13oz cracker.

After locating a few perch shoals on the sonar, they proved hard to tempt at first but, after changing to a Rapala crankbait, Alex had a solid take and initially wondered if he’d connected with a trout, as the heavy fish made several powerful runs.

But, once he saw that it was a huge perch, he said that his heart was in his mouth for the rest of the fight! The specimen stripey measured 49.5cm and set a new personal best for Alex.
