While big pike are often reported from stillwaters, catching one over 20lb from a river is still a fish of a lifetime—and landing two in the same session is even rarer still. Alex Hughes not only accomplished this incredible feat, but he also managed to catch one of the stunning brace on a lure, making the capture all the more remarkable.
“I recently had a truly red-letter pike session on the River Wye, I'm still trying to comprehend the session now," Alex told us.
“Conditions were perfect, and my friend Mitch and I got down to the river and decided to start off by walking the beat with our lure rods."
“I lost a good fish in the first swim, so I moved on to the next and flicked the lure up the margin to a classic pike ‘snag’."
“As soon as it hit the surface, the water exploded as a big fish hit the lure! It weighed 28lb, and is a new river PB for me."
