Unexpected salmon banked while pike fishing

When fishing rivers, you never truly know what species of fish you might catch. While we can target specific fish and generally catch the ones we’re after, fishing has a way of proving that it still holds some mystery from time to time.

Shane Ducky was fishing for pike on the Trent when he landed this salmon—a fish he had never caught before and the last species he ever expected to see while out on the bank.

TRY SOME OF THESE EXCELLENT STRETCHES OF RIVER TO CATCH UNEXPECTED SPECIES.

The last set of jaws Shane expected to see

"I only started pike fishing around three months ago, as I usually target carp and wanted to try something new for a change," Shane told us.

"I met up with a couple of friends who had also just started pike fishing, with us deciding to fish a stretch of river between the new fish bypass in Colwick and the Burton Joyce area."

It didn't take Shane log to get amongst the fish, as within a few casts with a lure, he managed to land himself a pike of around 8lbs to get the session off to a great start. After very little action in the following couple of hours, Shane had a coffee and decided to reduce the size of his pike lure from a 5inch to a 3in to see if that would change his fortune.

"The new lure had only been in the water for a few seconds after the first cast when a sharp bang hit the rod, and my line began stripping from the reel," he recalled.

"The fish jumped clear out of the water, and we had no idea what it was. After a couple more savage runs, we finally got the fish safely into the net."

"We couldn’t believe it when we realised it was a salmon! None of us had ever seen one before, let alone caught one, so we were incredibly excited," he said.

We quickly placed the fish on the mat, unhooked it, and after a couple of quick pictures, it swam away strongly. It’s a capture that has blown my mind and one I’ll never forget!"
