After allowing nearly half-a-billion litres of raw sewage to be discharged into the River Trent, Seven Trent Water has been fined over £2m.

In a case brought by the Environment Agency at Cannock Magistrates, District Judge Kevin Grego concluded there was a ‘reckless failure’ by the company.

The court heard that over the course of an incident at Strongford Wastewater Treatment Works near Stoke-on-Trent, approximately 470 million litres of raw sewage was discharged – around 260 million of that illegally.

Severn Trent was fined £1,072,000 and £1,000,000, plus costs of £16,476.67 and a victim surcharge of £181.

Robbie Moore, Minister for Water and Rural Growth, said: “We are delivering more investment, stronger regulation and tougher enforcement – ensuring those who pollute our waters are held to account.”
