After what seemed like an age, I finally managed to spend some time alone with the precious Aventus Zero 900. Now, before I go any further, this clearly isn’t a pole that’s going to appeal to the masses. Rather, it’s an aspirational tackle item aimed at the upper echelons of match angling, priced to make you cough up your breakfast cornflakes. Other than buying a boat or a lake, it’s likely to be the most expensive tackle item you could invest in.

But then, if you’re a serious match angler who demands the very best, it’s very likely to be of huge interest. Think of it as owning a Ferrari or a similar supercar – if you had the money and inclination, would you? Yes! We all would!

So, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. The Aventus poles have the same technical specifications – Super
Glide smooth paint finish, performance points for optimal linear stiffness and rigidity, rigid joint sections, friction-free matt tape finish, and built around the same ultra-fast-taper mandrel.

The only real difference between them is that the flagship 900 is made from an improved grade of high-tensile carbon, giving that bit more stiffness and balance at its full length over its sibling.

I can’t see any need to bang on any further than that, because if you’re in the market to buy one you’ll already have done your homework and will know about what makes it tick.

The finish on the Guru Aventus 900 is sublime!

The verdict

The 900 is not merely stiff, it’s super-stiff! It may be a touch wider at the butt end than some other flagship poles, but it was hardly noticeable, even in my small hands. The payback comes in its shipping rigidity and tip-speed agility.

Barston skimmers are easy enough to catch, but under match conditions you’ll need to get them out of the water and into your net very quickly, so shipping at speed is essential. It’s here you start to realise just how special this pole is. The pearlescent paint job on the butt sections is nothing short of spectacular, and it moves through your hands like the proverbial greased whippet.

That, combined with the linear stiffness of the thing, makes effortless work of shipping. Is it strong, though? Well, in truth I didn’t manage to leg-up a carp, but I’ve handled enough poles to know this one will handle virtually anything that comes along!

If you’re still in any doubt about its build qualities, just cast your eye over the anglers who have been involved with its design – Ringer, Bennett, Godfrey, Dent, Rooney and Tank. Would they ever consider using anything that wouldn’t be at home on any venue in the country? My case rests.

My advice to any would-be Guru Aventus Zero 900 customer would be to go somewhere a long way from your home to handle one. Then, on the drive back, you’ll have more than enough time to work out exactly what you’ll say to the missus about the amount of money you’re about to splash!

This pole really put a smile on my face

A true-all round pole!

Pros

  • Loads of package options to choose from
  • Super strong with incredible stiffness at 16m

Cons

  • Is a little wider than some poles on the market due to its taper

Our pick of the alternatives

Utilising new and ultra-high-grade nano alloy carbons, Daiwa's Air Z Pro pole has built a strong reputation as one of the best there is. A flagship product that provides the ultimate in performance.

One of the most expensive poles on the market but also one of the best performers. The Daiwa Air Z Pro pole is incredibly light, even at 16m. With a match top two kit, this is the best pole in the world. Even with the heavier top kits, it's ridiculously rigid, incredibly responsive and super stiff.

Pros

  • Light, stiff, responsive - everything you want in a pole
  • Spares are readily available in the UK

Cons

  • More expensive than other flagship poles

Best technologically advanced fishing pole

The G60 is the new flagship pole from the MAP stable and it is impressive to say the least! Designed to be both tough and balanced, it's comfortable to use at its full 16m length, remaining stiff and responsive, making it a superb choice for any angler at any venue!

Built with Graphene Modified Resin, the G60 achieves incredible strength without added weight. The anti-friction finish ensures smooth shipping, and the section alignment system allows for a quick and precise setup.

The G60 isn’t just a match pole, power pole, or finesse tool, it’s all of them combined. If we had to list our top flagship poles for any style of fishing, the G60 would be on each one. While we won’t call it the best pole ever made, it is undoubtedly the most complete I've ever used. My prediction is that, in a few years’ time, every pole on the market will be incorporating this incredible carbon material.

Pros

  • Graphene makes pole stronger and stiffer without adding weight
  • Incredibly stiff and responsive
  • Rippled finish on butt section for grip and identification when shipping

Cons

  • Top kits are on the long side (2.7m)
  • Understated graphics make it difficult to identify the 13m, 14.5m & 16m sections at a glance

Best competition carp pole

A capable tool for pole fishing, the Garbolino UK 1 Accomplice HP has been developed to satisfy the needs of both commercial and natural venue anglers. Refined from its two predecessors, the UK 1 and the UK 1 Accomplice Evo, this flagship pole offers an exceptional combination of lightness, strength, and responsiveness, making it a pleasure to use at its full 16m length.

Its ultra-smooth finish allows for effortless shipping, while the overall design enhances precision and control, enabling you to present bait with pinpoint accuracy. Whether you’re targeting carp in commercial waters or silverfish in natural settings, the UK1 Accomplice Pro will adapt effortlessly.

Pros

  • Incredibly rigid pole
  • Strong and robust
  • Great for commerical work

Cons

  • There are better silverfish poles
  • Sections can be difficult to get at times
